Hello Hemingway

Fernando Pérez, Cuba 1990, Spielfilm, Farbe, 35 mm

Inhalt

Finstere fünfziger Jahre, finstere Neunziger: HELLO HEMMINGWAY

Good bye Hemingway ...

„(...) That same effort to address and engage the audience in a reflection on the themes of national identity is the motivational force of Fernando Pérez’s 1990 film HELLO HEMINGWAY, a film which historicizes the female figure by situating its protagonist in the Havana of the final year of Batista dictatorship, thereby aligning the notion of female identity with the revolutionary concept of struggle. The film’s plot is developed in much the same spirit as Solás’ original LUCÍA, that is, as a way of looking through the transparency of the vulnerable female to the larger image of the nation’s struggle.

Set in 1956, during the Batista dictatorship, in the Havana suburb in which Hemingway resided, HELLO HEMINGWAY tells the story of Larita, the illegitimate daughter of a kitchen maid who has been recommended by her high school teacher for a scholarship to study English in the United States. First, however, she needs to collect the various letters of support from members of the community and to pass a series of interviews. The film traces Larita’s efforts as she slowly comes to realize the impossibility of achieving her goal given her humble background and her precarious financial resources.

The process through which Larita reaches that consciousness, fails to proceed with the application, and finally resigns herself to remain in Cuba is structured around her contact with three women: her grandmother, Josefa, her teacher, Dr. Martínez, and Miss Amalia the representative of the American Embassy who interviews candidates for the scholarship.

As allegory, HELLO HEMINGWAY functions in a complex manner, for not only does the narrative involve the schematization of political and cultural scenarios through female characters that has, by this time, become a staple of Cuban Cinema, but it is also built upon a subtle historical theme in which the fairly familiar view of Batista’s Cuba as ‘bastard child of the USA’ (Richard Fragen: The Transformation of Political Culture in Cuba, Stanford. Studies in Comparative Politics (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1969), p. 6-10) is reimaged through the protagonist of Hemingway’s novella, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. In this intricate structure Larita is seen first as the economically oppressed, socially marginalized Cuba of the neo-colonial period, her desire to go to the United States reflecting precisely the kind of mental colonization in which the objects of individual desire and of social aspiration are those of the American cultural empire. In such a context the proper Miss Amalia, who voices unsubtle classist comments about Larita, embodies the evil of the United States.

What saves the narrative from such a simplistic scheme, however, is that gradually Larita undergoes a transformation when she reads The Old Man and The Sea. Instead of identifying with Hemingway, the author, she comes to identify with his creation, the fisherman Santiago, whose indomitable spirit will lead her on. The film thus displaces the historical Hemingway by the image of a Cuban fisherman whom Larita views at Cojimar where THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA is set. When she stands on the rocks at Cojimar and views at the old fisherman casting his net, we understand that Larita is replicating the identical situation of the little boy, Manolín, in Hemingway’s story, who also deeply identified with Santiago’s indomitable spirit. That moment, which ends the film, makes apparent not only the repatriation of the Hemingway narrative into a Cuban context, but also, strikingly, its regendering into a female narrative.

Thus Larita’s failure to go to the United States is figured as part of a gender design in which she will become heir, as the film implies, to the struggle that will shortly lead to revolution’s triumph. In this, Pérez’s script appears to follow the Utopian reading of the past in which the contemporary audience of the 1990s is conditioned to view in Larita’s character a precuror to the revolutionary ethos that connects her with them. Even Hemingway’s theme, stated by Dr. Martínez as a translation exercise for her English class – »a man may be destroyed, but he cannot be defeated« – is recuperated into political struggle against Batista that serves as a historical background to the film.

In this way, HELLO HEMINGWAY re-semanticizes Hemingway’s writings as a form of national mythology and, in addition, a spiritual precursor to the revolutionary spirit of post-1959 Cuba. Like Solás’ ‘historical’ heroines in LUCÍA, and the other ‘TRANPARENT WOMEN’ who have followed in her wake, Larita is ultimately understood as a figure gestating towards the future, and the audience is once again given the opportunity to ponder that future through her struggle.“

„Although not an adaptation, Fernando Pérez’ feature, HELLO HEMINGWAY (1990) can be linked with the previous two films [CARTAS DEL PARQUE, Tomas Gutiérrez Alea, 1988; LA BELLA DEL ALHAMBRA, Enrique Pineda Barnet, 1989 - V.P.]. It is the portrait of a young woman from Havana’s suburbs, poor but anxious to continue studying. She is also the neighbour of the famous American writer. Handled with sensitivity and a genuine kind of intimacy (without stressing the fact that Cubans no longer have to beg for a scholarship), the picture acquires an unexpected commentary through a reading of passages from The Old Man and The Sea. With just a few touches, Fernando Pérez succeeds in reconstituting the look of the capital before the revolution (as he had done in his earlier film CLANDESTINOS, 1987). HELLO HEMINGWAY seeks to communicate with the young audience, without condescension and without preaching at them.“
